Rishabh Pant is set to make his return to cricket during IPL 2024, where he will also take on the role of captain for Delhi Capitals (DC). This announcement came from DC Chairman Parth Jindal on Tuesday, marking Pant’s comeback to professional cricket after a hiatus of 14 months.
Pant had encountered an accident on December 31, 2022, while traveling from Delhi to Roorkee, resulting in surgery and sidelining him for the entirety of the 2023 season. During his absence, Australian batsman David Warner assumed the captaincy for DC. Pant received medical clearance from the NCA just last week.
Expressing his anticipation for Pant’s return, Parth Jindal stated, “We are delighted to have Rishabh back as our captain. His resilience and audacity have always defined his style of cricket. We eagerly await his comeback to our squad, injecting fresh energy and enthusiasm into the upcoming season.”
Wicket keeping Uncertainty Looms
However, uncertainty surrounds Pant’s role as a wicketkeeper. Neither Parth Jindal nor the team management has addressed Pant’s wicketkeeping status. Nevertheless, a recent video posted by Pant on Instagram showcased him practicing wicketkeeping drills and exercises. Additionally, he was observed batting and fielding during a 20-over training match at the NCA.
Rishabh’s Cricket Hiatus
Pant has been absent from cricket since his participation in the Test series against Bangladesh in December 2022. Following his accident on December 31, 2022, he underwent three surgeries on his right knee.
Recently, Pant participated in a practice match organized by the NCA in Bengaluru, where he showcased his batting skills. He has also been actively batting in the nets with the Indian national team.
Visakhapatnam to Host DC’s Home Matches
Delhi Capitals will kick off their campaign with two home matches in Visakhapatnam. This decision stems from logistical challenges arising from the scheduling of 11 matches, including the playoffs of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Consequently, DC had to relocate two of their home fixtures to Visakhapatnam.
