Congress Member of Parliament Rahul Gandhi officially accepted the invitation for a public debate with Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the Lok Sabha elections. The invitation was extended by former Supreme Court judge Madan B Lokur, former High Court Chief Justice AP Shah, and senior journalist N Ram.

The trio penned a letter inviting both PM Modi and Rahul Gandhi to engage in a public debate on the key issues of the 2024 elections. Dated May 9, the letter addressed the allegations and counter-allegations made by both sides, emphasizing the potential benefit to citizens of hearing directly from political leaders in a non-partisan and non-commercial setting.

A day later, Rahul Gandhi responded, expressing his acceptance of the debate invitation. He indicated that either himself or Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge would be willing to participate.

“I have discussed your invitation with the Congress President, Mallikarjun Kharge. We agree that such a debate will help people understand our respective visions and enable them to make informed choices. It is also crucial to dispel any unfounded allegations associated with our parties,” Rahul Gandhi stated.

“As the principal parties contesting the election, the public deserves to hear directly from their leaders. Consequently, either myself or the Congress President would be pleased to participate in such a debate,” he added.

Rahul Gandhi suggested that the details and format of the debate could be discussed “if and when the Prime Minister agrees to participate.”
