Mayor Anne Hidalgo Exits Twitter, Citing Toxicity and Democracy Undermining Concerns

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo has made headlines by announcing her departure from the social media platform once known as Twitter, now referred to as X. In a series of posts made on November 27, Mayor Hidalgo shared her decision to leave the platform, citing growing concerns about the proliferation of disinformation, anonymous accounts, and a toxic environment that she believes undermines democracy and constructive debate.

Her departure comes amid a tumultuous period for the mayor, marked by criticism over a recent trip to the French South Pacific territories and clashes with government ministers regarding Paris’s readiness for the upcoming 2024 Summer Games. Hidalgo’s decision to leave X was not solely in response to these events but was a carefully considered move over time.

The changes implemented on the platform since Elon Musk took control in October 2022, dismantling certain core features, have contributed to her conviction that the platform has deviated from its original purpose, prompting her to label it as a “gigantic global sewer.”

In a move that caught attention, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo announced her departure from the social media platform, previously known as Twitter and now called X.

Expressing concerns about disinformation and a toxic environment on the platform, Mayor Hidalgo stated that the current state of the platform is harmful to democracy and constructive discussion. Her decision to leave came after recent criticism over a trip she took and clashes with government ministers regarding Paris’s preparedness for the upcoming 2024 Summer Games. However, her departure was not a knee-jerk reaction but a carefully considered move made over time.

This decision was influenced by the changes initiated on the platform after Elon Musk assumed control in October 2022, which led to alterations in its core features.
