The Income Tax department has informed the Supreme Court that it will refrain from taking any coercive measures to recover Rs 1700 crores from the Congress party during the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The department, in a significant move, has urged the court to postpone the matter for hearing until June, citing a desire to avoid creating any disruptions for political parties during the election period.

This development comes in the wake of ongoing legal proceedings related to the recovery of dues from various entities, including political parties. The decision reflects the department’s commitment to ensuring a smooth electoral process without impeding the functioning of political parties.

The Congress party, which has been embroiled in a legal battle over the dues, is likely to benefit from this decision as it prepares for the upcoming elections. The assurance from the Income Tax department is expected to provide the party with some relief amid the election fervor.
