India has announced its squad for the highly anticipated ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson and spinner Yuzvendra Chahal secured spots in India’s squad for the top ICC event, which will be organized in the USA and the West Indies. However, star batter Shubman Gill and big-hitting Rinku Singh were named in the reserves group.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed the squad on Tuesday. Rohit Sharma will lead ‘Men in Blue,’ following discussions between secretary Jay Shah and chief selector Ajit Agarkar in Ahmedabad.
Rohit-Pandya to lead the team
Rohit Sharma’s leadership will guide the team, with Hardik Pandya continuing as vice-captain despite recent challenges in form, especially during his stint with Mumbai Indians in the ongoing IPL.
Who all made the cut?
Sanju Samson’s consistent performances in the IPL, both with the bat and as captain for Rajasthan Royals, earned him a spot as the second wicketkeeper-batter after Rishabh Pant. Meanwhile, Shivam Dube’s impeccable batting secured his position in the squad.
However, Shubman Gill, who impressed as Gujarat Titans captain in the IPL, found himself among the standbys along with Kolkata Knight Riders’ Rinku Singh.
Surprisingly, the selectors showed confidence in Yashasvi Jaiswal, who performed exceptionally well for Rajasthan Royals despite a slow start in the IPL. Stalwart batter KL Rahul was dropped from the squad.
The T20 World Cup will kickstart on June 2 in the USA and the Caribbean islands. The first match will be played in New York.
