The Election Commission of India (ECI) has confirmed that all preparations are complete for the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections, which will commence tomorrow, with weather conditions expected to be favourable. The phase 2 polling encompasses 88 Lok Sabha seats across 13 States and Union Territories, with around 16 crore voters expected to participate in nearly 1.67 lakh polling stations.
Phase 2 Overview and Voter Engagement
Phase 2 will see an array of constituents, with 73 general, 6 Scheduled Tribes (ST), and 9 Scheduled Castes (SC) constituencies going to polls. Voter participation has been a focal point, with the Commission implementing extended polling hours in four constituencies in Bihar (Banka, Madhepura, Khagaria, and Munger) to accommodate the hot weather conditions, allowing voting from 7 AM to 6 PM.
Logistical and Voter Assistance
To support the massive logistical operation, the ECI has deployed 3 helicopters, 4 special trains, and nearly 80,000 vehicles to transport polling and security personnel. Enhanced voter facilitation measures are in place, including over 4195 model polling stations, more than 4100 women-managed polling stations, and over 640 stations managed by Persons with Disabilities (PwDs).
Surveillance and Security
Vigilance is high with 4553 Flying Squads, 5731 Static Surveillance Teams, and 1462 Video Surveillance Teams monitoring the situation. Additionally, 251 Observers including General, Police, and Expenditure Observers are on the ground to ensure fair conduct of the elections.
Voter Accessibility and Comfort
The Commission has made significant efforts to ensure voter comfort and accessibility, with Assured Minimum Facilities such as water, shade, toilets, ramps, volunteers, wheelchairs, and electricity at all polling stations. Special attention has been given to accommodate elderly and disabled voters, including a home voting option which has seen positive feedback.
ECI Encourages to Vote
The Election Commission encourages a high turnout, urging voters to “vote with responsibility and pride.” Voter Information Slips have been distributed, serving both as a facilitation tool and an invitation to participate in the democratic process. Additional identity verification options are available for those without a Voter ID card, ensuring everyone registered has the opportunity to vote.
The remaining phases of the election will continue until June 1, with the results scheduled for announcement on June 4.
