Former Rajya Sabha MP Ashfaq Karim’s resignation from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) marks a significant setback for the party in Bihar. Karim tendered his resignation to RJD chief Lalu Prasad, citing his commitment to strengthening social justice as the reason for joining the party initially.
In his resignation letter, Karim expressed disappointment with the party’s approach towards social justice, particularly its failure to allocate seats in accordance with demographic considerations. He accused the party leadership, notably Lalu Yadav, of neglecting the interests of Muslims and failing to provide them with a fair share of representation.
Karim’s decision to step down follows a series of grievances voiced against the RJD’s policies, particularly regarding ticket distribution for electoral contests. Despite promises made by the party, Karim was denied the opportunity to contest the Lok Sabha elections from Katihar constituency, which was ultimately allocated to the Congress. This move by the grand alliance further strained relations within the RJD.

Prior to his resignation, Karim publicly criticized the RJD’s strategies during a press conference, questioning the rationale behind certain candidate selections and highlighting the party’s weaknesses in regions like Seemanchal. He also expressed concerns over the inadequate representation of Muslims within the party’s ranks.
In concluding his resignation letter, Karim extended well wishes for Lalu Prasad’s health and requested the acceptance of his resignation. His departure underscores growing dissatisfaction within the RJD and raises questions about the party’s future strategies in Bihar’s political landscape.
