Two state-run hospitals in East Delhi, Dr Hedgewar Aarogya Sansthan and Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsalaya, are under scrutiny after reportedly refusing treatment to an eight-year-old boy with a fractured arm. The incident, which occurred on April 1, has sparked outrage and led to Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj ordering a comprehensive investigation.
Shortage of Supplies and Doctors
According to reports, the boy’s father, a security guard, rushed him to Dr Hedgewar Aarogya Sansthan’s emergency ward after he fractured his arm while playing at school. However, he was allegedly turned away due to a shortage of medical supplies. The situation worsened when the second hospital, Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsalaya, claimed to have no available orthopedic doctor.
Private Hospital Intervention
Frustrated with the lack of assistance, the boy’s family sought treatment at a private hospital, where they incurred significant expenses. This incident has drawn attention to the inadequacies of government healthcare facilities and the plight of economically disadvantaged families.
Minister’s Response
Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj has expressed dismay over the incident and demanded accountability from hospital authorities. He has criticized the Health and Family Welfare Department for failing to ensure the availability of essential medical supplies. Despite previous assurances, such incidents continue to highlight systemic failures in public healthcare.
Judicial Intervention
Social activist Ashok Agarwal has taken the matter to the District High Court, emphasizing the urgent need for systemic reforms. The judiciary has expressed concern over the recurring failures in healthcare delivery, signaling the gravity of the situation.
Hospital Statements
While hospital officials cite miscommunication and logistical challenges, questions remain about their preparedness to handle medical emergencies. Dr. Seema Kapoor of Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsalaya has acknowledged the need for additional staff and extended consultation hours.
