Renowned climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has brought an end to his 21-day hunger strike started on March 6, marking a significant moment in the ongoing campaign for Ladakh’s statehood and ecological preservation. Wangchuk’s decision, announced after a relentless fasting, underscores his unwavering commitment to the cause, drawing widespread attention and garnering immense support.
Since commencing his fast on March 6th, Wangchuk, known for inspiring the character Phunsukh Wangdu in the film ‘3 Idiots’, had captured national and international interest. His protest, sustained solely on salt and water, aimed to highlight Ladakh’s urgent need for statehood and the protection of its fragile Himalayan environment.
As news of Wangchuk’s conclusion of the hunger strike spread, thousands converged across Ladakh, expressing solidarity with a greater cause. Women’s groups, determined by Wangchuk’s resolve, have pledged to continue the advocacy efforts, signaling a groundswell of support for Ladakh’s aspirations.
In a video message shared prior to concluding the fast, Wangchuk urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to heed Ladakh’s plea for safeguarding its unique ecosystem and tribal heritage. Despite facing sub-zero temperatures and arduous conditions, Wangchuk remained resolute, emphasizing the imperative of action.
Ladakh, comprising Leh and Kargil districts, attained Union Territory status following the revocation of Article 370 in 2019. However, discontent persisted as demands for statehood and tribal rights protection gained traction. The formation of a high-level committee failed to assuage concerns, prompting Wangchuk’s hunger strike.
