21kg heroin Seized in Assam Worth ₹210 Crores; One Arrested

The Special Task Force (STF) of Assam police, in collaboration with Cachar district police, has confiscated 21 kg of heroin, including 18 kg of its pure form, from the Silchar area. The market value of the seized drugs could exceed Rs 500 crore in the international market.

Details Unveiled by Partha Sarathi Mahanta, IGP (STF)

Partha Sarathi Mahanta, IGP (STF), informed ANI that out of the 21 kg of heroin seized last night in Silchar, 18 kg comprises its purest form. He explained that during the preparation for consumption, the 18 kg of heroin could escalate to 50-60 kg. Further processing is required for consumption.

International Market Value

Mahanta added that the per kilogram value of heroin, ready for consumption, stands at approximately Rs 10 crore in the international market. The potential escalation of the purest form of heroin during processing could drive its final market value to over Rs 500 crore.

Details of Seizure

According to Mahanta, the authorities received information about the transportation of a significant drug consignment 10 days ago. The vehicle from which the large quantity of drugs was seized had commenced its journey from a neighboring state three days prior.

Police Vigilance

Expressing the gravity of the situation, the IGP (STF) asserted, “It is a big drugs haul, and Assam police are always ready to fight against drugs.”

Government Initiatives

After assuming office as Chief Minister of Assam in May 2021, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma directed the Assam police to intensify efforts against drug trafficking, considering it a mission. Since then, the Assam police have seized contraband drugs and narcotics worth Rs 1,882 crore.

Recent Seizures

A state government report indicates that Assam Police have been relentless in their fight against narcotics. They have recovered 167 kg of heroin, 30,963.72 kg of ganja, and other substances between May 10, 2021, and January 2, 2024. In total, Assam Police’s seizures amount to contraband drugs and narcotics worth Rs 1,882 crore during the mentioned period.
